This week at the 2012 Australian Hotel Association/SA Awards for Excellence the wonderful Sevenhill Hotel won “Best Country Bistro/ Casual Dining.” We couldn't agree more!

The Sevenhill Hotel has been the meeting place of this picturesque Clare Valley town since its establishment in 1863. Our winemaker Ang Meaney works her magic on our grapes at Stone Bridge Winery (our barrels are pictured below) just north of Sevenhill, so we visit this little town often, and these days we love it more every time we go there.

First, there's The Little Red Grape. Owner Dorham Pfeiffer has taken historic stone buildings and renovated them into a beautiful, modern cellar door with tastings 7 days a week of small wine labels such as us, Stringy Brae, Good Catholic Girl and Naked Run. But The Little Red Grape is so much more – a gourmet bakery with everything from pasties to artisan sourdough, and a gorgeous homewares and gift shop too. It's just a beautiful spot to stop and explore.

Just up the road is the historic Sevenhill Cellars, where the Jesuits have been making wines since 1851. Taste the wines, take a walking tour of the sacred sights (pictured) on the grounds with Br John May SJ, or lounge on the lawn with a cheese platter. This is where Clare Valley winemaking began.

Now back to the Sevenhill Hotel; ask nicely (as we did) and you can dine in the cellar surrounded by legendary wines of the Clare Valley, like those made right around the corner at Sevenhill Cellars. To see our own Bundaleer Wines here, including our Clare Valley Golden Spike Chardonnay, is such a thrill.

Thanks Dorham and team for including us in your special piece of history. And for the lamb shanks, which were very delicious, (And for being nice to our children. Next time we will come without them and sample more wine instead of just putting it on the table for the photo!)

The town of Sevenhill is on Main North Road only 2 hours north of Adelaide; a perfect stopping place on your way to the North Star Hotel at Melrose.

It's that Bundaleer time of year...
